What is Catnip?
Catnip is a plant containing a bicyclic terpenoid, referred to as nepetalactone. Cats are attracted to Catnip after inhaling this chemical which binds to olfactory receptors.
The scent does not affect humans; however, it acts like a neurostimulator for cats, making them "high". Approximately 2/3 of cats are affected by catnip. In response to catnip, a cat may rub, roll over, jump up and down, or "go nuts" for several minutes before eventually losing interest.
Catnip is a perennial herb and can be grown indoors.
